Cycling my way through the summer

In less than two weeks, I’m headed to Santa Fe to ride in the Santa Fe Century. A century ride, as you may have guessed is 100 miles. About a month after Santa Fe is the MS 150, which is a ride close to my heart. I pledged to raise $1,000 to help fund research for MS. As of today, I’m 95% percent there! I’ve always known that I have a great circle of friends and family, but this fundraising effort has only reinforced how generous and caring they really are. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated! As a way to thank each of you, I’m going to plan on adding the century loop to the second day of the ride! Here’s a quick update on what I’ve been doing to get ready for this summer’s rides. I spent the last few months fixing up my old Cannondale R400. I replaced the double chainring with a triple, added a new bottom bracket, handlebars, shifters, stem, cables, cable housing and deraillers. The only things I didn’t replace were the brakes, headset, wheels, frame and fork. I’ve also spent the last few months training. During the last month or so, I’ve tried to ride at least 100 miles each week, including one long ride on the weekend. I’ve seen quite an improvement since I started, although I don’t think I’m quite where I need to be. The last time I rode seriously was when I was in high school. We had a cycling club that would take a trip to Taos, NM each spring. It was a five-day, 315-mile ride from Denver. We had a Sag wagon and camped each night. One of these days, I’d like to do a trip like that again. This weekend Chuck, Karl and I are going to ride the Elephant Rock Metric Century Route to get some last-minute miles in before Santa Fe. I’ve read that you’re not supposed to ride much the week before a big ride, so instead of riding, I’ll focus on nutrition and getting everything ready for the ride.
