I'm digging (sorta) free AT&T wifi

I've been hearing all sorts of rumors about AT&T and Starbucks offering free wifi for iPhone users and people trying to trick Safari's user agent to think it's an iPhone.

My friend and colleague Dan Pacheco turned me onto a better way to get free net access. The first thing you need to do is to buy, refill or register a Starbucks card. I bought one for $5 at Starbucks. Then go to the Starbucks homepage and sign up for a Starbucks account and register your card.

After you do that it will ask you if you want to add free wifi to your account, which you do. Sign up and you're ready to surf for free for 2 hours a day.

I was able to log in and access the net on my laptop and my iPod Touch at the same time, so I'm guessing that you could have multiple laptops using the same account.

The really cool thing about this is that it gives you access to all AT&T wifi hotspots, which in my area are mainly in Starbucks and Barnes and Noble Bookstores.

Besides only having two free hours per day, the only real downside to this is that you have to have activity on your Starbucks account each month. But I'm willing to shell out $5/month for up to 60 hours of free wifi.

There's also the argument that Starbucks is the Walmart of coffee shops. That might be true, and I do try and support the local coffee shops whenever I can. But when it comes to getting work done, I'm guessing that AT&T has better bandwidth and faster connections then the mom and pops.
