Scrabulous app pulled from Facebook

Myself and thousands of other Facebook users logged in this morning to check on their Scrabulous games only to find that the app has been removed for all US and Canadian users.

Hasbro sued the makers of the game - two brothers from India - for copyright infringement

I saw the writing on the wall for Scrabulous once Hasbro and Electronic Arts created their own Scrabble Facebook app, which coincidentally wasn't working this morning when I tried to add it.

People are not happy wih Hasbro. Here are some excerpts from the Save Scrabulous Group's Wall:

  • You blew it, Hasbro.
  • This is Hasbros worst decision since their Oozinator gun ad debacle. Yeah, Google that craziness.
  • I will never buy another Hasbro product again. Because of Scrabulous, I've bought several Scrabble games for friends over the past year. No more Scrabulous means no more money for Hasbro, as far as I'm concerned.
  • Never been so sad as this morning... This is one way I use to stay in close connection with my mom who lives across the country. Something must be worked out between these companies.
  • If they shut down Scrabulous, I will post a video of myself destroying a new Scrabble set.

Many of the people are emailing Hasbro and complaining about this action. The irony here is that this unauthorized application got people to play (and therefore buy) the board game version. Although, I suppose the $25,000 per month revenue Scrabulous was bringing in was just too much for Hasbro to ignore.

I for one hope that something gets worked out. At the very least, it would be nice to get our Scrabulous stats ported over to the official Scrabble app.

Now, I'm scared that World Conquest, my other Facebook addiction, will meet the same fate. Hopefully there's no trademark on Risk.
