I've been pretty quiet on the baby front lately, mainly because everything has been going smoothly (well except for Christina's first few months of near-constant nausea).

But on Monday, we went in for our 20-week checkup and had an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed that we're having a girl! Everything looked normal on the ultrasound, so that was good news.

I haven’t been blogging much lately, which is due to some really big news. Christina and I are having a baby!

We found out on April 9, when C took a home pregnancy test, which turned out positive. When she took another one the next day and the result didn’t change, we knew we were in it for the long haul.

You know the old adage about not judging a book by its cover? Well, I experienced the perfect example of that last night when we went to watch the season opener of the Denver Roller Dolls roller derby league.

Since I had never been to a roller derby match, I based my assumptions on the few pictures I’ve seen of Roller Derby girls, and expected it to be a small crowd of rockabilly-fashioned folk drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon. Turns out I was way off – well, except for the PBR part.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I hate shopping. This means that I don’t buy anything new until there’s a real need to do so.

Keens: My old and new KeensKeens: My old and new Keens
That’s the case with my beloved Keen Newport H2 sandals. I bought my first pair three years ago before a trip that included some hiking and cave-tubing in Belize. Since then, I’ve worn these shoes nearly everyday - summer and winter. They’ve been to Belize. They’ve trekked around Honduras and the beaches of Mexico. They’ve become stuck in the mud while clamming in Georgia. They’ve walked the canals of Venice, and ridden bikes through Tuscany. They’ve been whitewater rafting, kayaking on the Colorado River and a ton of lakes. They’ve been hiking and trekking all over Colorado. And they’ve been on more dog walks than I can count.

Conehead EddieConehead Eddie

There are two lessons in this post. Most importantly, never, ever let your dog chew on a corn cob. Secondly, buy health insurance for your pet – it’s well worth it!

Unbeknown to us, Eddie our Jack Russell Terrier got a hold of a corn cob at a family barbecue and ate the whole thing. Unfortunately corn cobs don’t digest in a dog’s digestive system and part of it got stuck in his intestines. The blockage was preventing any food or water from going through, which means he’d die unless it was removed.

I’m not wed to a particular Web browser (although I can’t say that about operating systems). Working on the web, I’ve found that I use whatever browser can handle the work that I’m doing at any particular time. This used to be a big deal back in the day when not all browsers had tabs and the people were really concerned with cross-browser compatibility. While still a concern (remember IE 6?) cross-browser compatibility isn’t as big an issue.

UbiquityYesterday, my colleague Jason pointed out a really cool Firefox plugin called Ubiquity. Although it's in an alpha release, this plugin has the power to change the way people use the Internet. In fact, it's already changed the way I work online.

So what is it? Well, it's best described as a easily accessible set of semantic tools that let you interact with the Web in new ways. It's easier to describe what it does, rather than describe what it is.

wordscraperIt looks like brothers Rajat & Jayant don't give up easily. Several days after they were forced to pull their Scrabulous app from Facebook, they introduced a new app called WordScraper.

Scrabulous fans will notice a similar, well-loved interface. The board and tiles are different, but game play looks to be the same. I just started a game, but I can't quite figure out the scoring. The tiles do not appear to hold unique numerical points.

Myself and thousands of other Facebook users logged in this morning to check on their Scrabulous games only to find that the app has been removed for all US and Canadian users.

Hasbro sued the makers of the game - two brothers from India - for copyright infringement

I saw the writing on the wall for Scrabulous once Hasbro and Electronic Arts created their own Scrabble Facebook app, which coincidentally wasn't working this morning when I tried to add it.
